Sexual Self-Definition
Introduction
At first glance, the concept of sex seems to be strictly biological. However, the term ‘sex’ has a deeper non-scientific meaning, which, when coupled with the imprimatur of science, is highly significant. Is there anything like the philosophy of sex?
The definition of sex can be drawn from many levels, such as morphological, physiological (hormonal levels), or behavioral (sexuality). According to Crooks and Baur, sexuality is an integral part of the personality of every human being. Its full development depends upon the satisfaction of basic human needs such as the desire for contact, intimacy, emotional expression, pleasure, tenderness, and love (Crooks & Baur 1).
Sexual self-definition consists of three main aspects:
- Gender identity.
- A gender role.
- Sexual orientation.

Researchers have confirmed Freud’s statement that human beings are sexual beings whose sexuality manifests itself at different ages from the very start of their existence. Therefore, as many psychologists recommend, the topic of sexuality should be introduced and discussed to children at the age of about 14 years.
However, parents should be aware that there are no set age limits when children begin showing sexual relation behaviors, and thus it is good to monitor child behaviors. The introduction of the topic of sexuality to a child will prepare him/her both physiologically and psychologically for the first sexual experience. For instance, a teenager aged between 13 and 14 years who engage in early sex may experience hormonal disorders. Parental advice on a child’s sexuality would help to prevent a child from engaging in early sexual activities.

Personally, I am a Hispanic adult aged 20 years old. However, despite being an adult, I am not married yet. I have noticed that I am more attracted to women, especially the white, Latin and Asian women. A survey conducted by the Gallup Institute of Public Opinion shows that Americans believe that the best age for marriage is 25 years for women and 27 years for men. However, this trend differs from place to place and has been changing in the last 60 years. In my own opinion, early marriages are associated with many negative outcomes. For instance, it has been noted that early marriages often end in divorce.
This can be attributed to the view that when a man is nearly thirty years old, his view on family matters is more serious, and the husband or wife can sacrifice themselves on behalf of the family. Before engaging in marriage, an individual ought to assert him/herself where he/she will spend most of his lifetime. One should know what he/she really wants in life, the vision and mission to achieve in life. After this self-realization, one can now comfortably get married and be assured of a stable family.
Personally, I do not plan to have children at my tender age. In our society today, many young teenagers, especially girls, become pregnant at the age of 25-30 years. However, the issue of planning for pregnancy should be approached consciously, since proper planning and preparation is essential. The fact that an individual has a good financial base and a stable marriage does not mean the couple is ready to have children. The couple should be well prepared to embrace the role of parenthood.
I think that religion plays a significant role in influencing sexuality. For instance, Christianity condemns polygamy while upholding monogamy. Many church doctrines uphold sexual purity and chastity. In addition, the church advocates for abstinence during widowhood. A virtuous spouse is considered the highest manifestation of sexual purity.
As for me, I am a Catholic. The Catholic Church has always been condemning engaging in early sexual activities in the Middle Ages. For instance, in Europe, sex was associated with evil and was seen as something that could endanger one’s life. Human beings were supposed to preserve their own body which, according to the Biblical teachings, is the body of the Holy Spirit.
However, the 20th century has seen many changes to these social norms. Many people, even firm church-goers have been condemned due to their engagement in premature sex. This has even worsened where some priests have been condemned for the same. Despite all these drawbacks, the Catholic Church has upheld its traditional beliefs such as banning abortion, and the use of biological methods as a means of contraception.
According to Goode, engagement in premarital sexual activities offends God. This principle is affirmed by the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. Historically, the Christian Church has upheld this principle for over 2000 years (Goode 11).

Being a Catholic, even without relying on the church teachings, I believe in marriage before sex. National surveys conducted in the U.S., where more than 1800 couples were considered, has shown that the possibility of a divorce is twice higher among couples who engaged in sexual activities before marriage compared to those couples who did not. In addition, sex before marriage and living together led to a decrease in spousal relationships in the future. One should abstain from sex before marriage in order to create a strong, healthy and happy family.
Many people never appreciate the fullness and satisfaction of sex after marriage. It is worth noting that I can become those people at any time, but they cannot become me. Despite the pressure from my colleagues to engage in sexual activities during my studying at college, I never bent my principles. My friends even advised me to forget about my principles. They even laughed and considered me a chaste, but I never took them seriously. I did what I felt was right for me and not to please anyone.

The concept of sexual intelligence is important to everyone. Couples should develop consciousness in relation to sexual energy. This would help them become aware of the levels of their physical and emotional energy in their bodies. One should learn to integrate and meditate on their sexual practice. Sexual intelligence should start at an individual level and then its consciousness will be reflected in lovemaking. I believe that sex should not only be for procreation but also be a form of pleasing activity. Sex has been shown to boost a healthy body.
For instance, one of the most common health impacts of sex on the body is that it promotes weight loss. In addition, regular sex has been shown to prevent the chances of heart attacks and strokes. The passion that people feel during sex normalizes the activity of blood vessels and improves blood circulation. Sex is the best medicine to strengthen the human immune system. Besides testosterone, oxytocin, which has a calming effect, is produced during sex and prepares the body for sleep. One should have sex not only for pleasure but also for health purposes.
