Benefits of Blood Donation

This paper presents a discussion on the benefits of blood donation. It also looks into the relevance and the process of the exercise. Blood donation is the transfer of appropriate blood from a donor to a receiver. According to the American Red Cross Society, every two seconds someone is in need of blood in the United States of America. From this demand, there are only three out of one hundred who donate the required blood. This means that there exists a huge deficit of blood donors. Hence, there is a need to donate blood. As it is mentioned above, there is huge demand for blood. By donating blood, one helps to save the lives of many patients who may be in need of the blood in order to survive. Thus, lives may be saved through blood donation. In order to become a blood donor, one should maintain a good physical body and be healthy. Consequently, any kind of lifestyle diseases are not acceptable. This promises a healthy living to the receiver.

Blood donation helps donors to be aware of their health status (Turgeon, 20). Before donation is done, it is important to check the health condition. Blood pressure, pulse rate, and other vital tests are done to gauge the suitability or legibility of one to donate blood (Severo, 112). If the results are appropriate, the one is allowed to donate blood. Otherwise, they get informed of their health problems and can take adequate measures and apply for medical help. Thus, the information on the health of donors is relayed to them.

Blood donation lowers the level of iron in the body. This has the effect of lowering the risk of the cardiovascular diseases. The chances of strokes are also reduced. According to Waldby (36), through the regular blood donation, the body is replenished. The old blood, which may have been contaminated, gets replaced with new, energized blood within 24 hours after donation. The body is, thereby, energized and is free from attacks by any diseases.

Only those individuals who have attained the age of 17 years and above, who are in good health condition and weight at least 110 pounds are allowed to donate blood. This process is rather simple: one registers for donation, completes a form, confirms their health status, draws blood and, finally, gets a snack to renew the energy. From the foregoing, it is evident that there are many advantages of donating blood. Moreover, one can save other people’s lives.
